Sunday Lunch Program
We all know the gospel story from Luke 16 of how the rich man passed poor Lazarus every day and did nothing to help this poor man. At Our Lady of Mercy, we not only have a mix of people from many countries but also from many different economical backgrounds. Sadly, the number of the jobless and homeless that cross our doorstep has been increasing over the past few years. This latest economic crisis only worsens their plight as it has become more difficult to find employment in Spain.
Although OLM is a relatively modest parish, financially speaking, our hearts are very generous. We know that we cannot find everyone a job or a place to sleep but we can at least make sure they are given something to eat on Sunday.
A group of loving and dedicated volunteers often make sandwiches for a group of 18-20 hungry mouths. Whenever possible, a fresh fruit light breakfast is also offered so as to provide for necessary vitamins. Although there are many soup kitchens in Madrid, the language difference can sometimes be a barrier for the English-speaking poor and so we try to provide for at least something on Sundays.

HOT LUNCHES TOO
Some parishioners felt that a sandwich was not sufficient, so from time to time, they make a great effort and serve a hot lunch. Past meals have included hot soups, Shepherd’s Pie, meatballs, and the like.
If you would like to volunteer for this great service (remember, an act of charity covers a multitude of sins), please contact Michele Martorell at sagaro@aol.com
